Go ye into all the World and preach the Gospel to every creature...
Cartographer:
Missionary Society
Date of Creation:
after 1902
A monumental missionary map of the world, colour-coded to show the diaspora of religious denominations: Protestants, Roman Catholics, Greek and Eastern [Churches], Jews, Mohammedans, and Heathens. The whole interpolated with religious epithets, quotes from the Bible and statistical charts, and used as a backdrop to “big-tent” evangelical gatherings.
The so-called “T.D. Collins Map”, named for Truman D. Collins (1831-1914), the Chair of the World Christianity and Mission Society who sponsored its publication, made its first appearance in 1897, when the Missionary Society announced: “Through the Generosity of Mr. T.D. Collins the Missionary Society has been able to publish a large and beautiful wall map of the world. It was prepared at great expense and would ordinarily cost much more than the amount for which it is now offered. It is in two styles and can be had for $5 or $2, according to the quality of cloth and colouring, of Missionary Secretaries, ... Every Chapter should have one”. The mas was re-issued in several subsequent editions, the current example includes information gleaned from the Centennial Survey of Foreign Missions, 1902 (“by Dennis”).
