A Souvenir of the Legendary Hotel Hana Ranch
Cartographer:
White, Ruth Taylor
Date of Creation:
after 1946
White's map of the Island of Maui appears on the inside of a folding souvenir for the ‘Hotel Hana Ranch. Hana Maui, Territory of Hawaii’.
White’s first ‘cartograph’ of the Island of Maui was published in colour in 1931, with three others of Kauai, Oahu, and Hawaii. The current map is almost identical to the earlier one, although it differs in small details, including the addition of a text box indicating the location of the Hotel. The blank page opposite White’s map includes perforations into which the tourist can slip a commemorative 8 x 10 photo. On the outside cover is a photograph of famous “The Arch-Hana”.
The Hana Ranch Hotel was originally built in 1946, afterwards the Hotel Hana Maui, it is now the newly renovated Travaasa Hotel.
Taylor White’s pictorial maps, often known as cartographs, combine graphic style, color and comical observations. One of Ruth’s earliest commissions was for Frank’s alma mater, Stanford University: the front cover of “The Stanford Illustrated Review”, November 1927.
