Holland West-Afrika Lijn
Cartographer:
Velsen, G. van
Date of Creation:
1949
An important post-WWII map showing West Africa carved up by Colonial powers: Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and Belgium. Vignettes throughout the map highlight the rich natural resources of the territories, and how they may be accessed by the flight routes of HWAL, or the Holland West-Africa Lijn.
The HWAL was a joint service operated by Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaart-Maatschappij N.V. and Hollandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij N.V., the latter appearing to withdraw around the mid-1960s. By the beginning of the 1970s it has disappeared from Lloyds register, although the constituent companies continued in the service.
