The Sizes of the Celestial Bodies, Andreas Cellarius, 1660
Corporum Coelestium Magnitudines. From Harmonia Macrocosmica, Amsterdam, 1660. Copperplate engraving.
The sizes of heavenly bodies in comparison to the Earth, according to Ptolemy.
From an engraving standpoint, this work is interesting for the way shading is used to indicate successive spherical circles that appear against each other for the purpose of measurement, as though depth were compressed.
The vertical line is a measurement scale, topping at about 10,000 German miles.
